The Islands Trust's mandate is to preserve and protect the trust area (our islands) and its unique amenities and environment for the benefit of the residents of the trust area and of the province. The Islands Trust deals with land use bylaws. If you are thinking of developing a property on Pender or determining what uses may be permitted for that special property, the Islands Trust will be a valuable resource for you.
The CRD is a form of local government. Part of the responsibilities of the CRD are to issue building permits, enforce bylaws, manage CRD property, animal control as well as promote education of responsibility in our Islands.
Visit our local Public Library. Run by dedicated volunteers our library in additional to book loans has internet access and a video library to select from. In the Summer months there is achildren's Storytime which can include stories and music.
Ferry schedules can be found here. Pender Island (Otter Bay) is a part of the Southern Gulf Islands. Due to a very busy summer and weekend schedule reservations are recommended. Ask about the option of a throughfare which allows you to travel through Swartz Bay terminal for the same price as a direct route.
The Pender Islands Parks Commission (PIPC) is run by eight local volunteer Parks Commissioners appointed by the Capital Regional District (CRD). It manages community parks and trails for the use of residents of North and South Pender Islands. It also maintains trails on highway right of ways to viewpoints and ocean accesses.
Disc Golf is a rapidly growing international sport and due to the efforts of a number of dedicated volunteers a lovely course has evolved on Pender. The game's played much like traditional golf, except that players use golf discs (very much like Frisbees™, but generally slimmer) and insteads of greens with cups, there are chain baskets and tone poles.
